IMI's warehouse productivity system is deployed in all 4 warehouses in the UK

Poundland is part of PepCo Group which has over 4882 stores in 20 territories including the UK, Republic of Ireland, Spain and across the CEE region. Generating more than £5bn of revenue, employing 43000 people, Poundland are an omni channel general merchandise and food retailer.

In the UK Poundland have a network of 4 sites serving both their retail estate of 850 stores and their e-commerce sales channel – IMI’s warehouse productivity system is deployed in all 4 warehouses. The network employs over 1000 people carrying out goods in, putaway, replenishment, pick, pack and QC duties. Poundland have 17 different product groups ranging from food and drink, fashion, health & beauty, household, DIY, gardening and pet care – each category has its own handling characteristics.

IMI’s warehouse productivity system has the functionality to take advantage of these handling characteristics and uses the data to ensure tasks being assigned to warehouse employees are fair.

“It is important to us that our people are treated fairly and IMI helps us to achieve this.”

It takes more effort to handle large cubic products or heavy products so it is important the task times set reflect these variances and remain fair at all times. The system uses X, Y & Z co-ordinates in all of the Poundland warehouses thereby ensuring the distances being travelled are captured and the task time set achievable. Furthermore, the system knows when an employee is stooping or stretching to reach items and ensures this is factored in to the task time set. Poundland also use the warehouse productivity system to proactively reduce travel in the warehouse by identifying where product is located with high levels of repeat visits and relocating them to reduce travel and also consider whether a different pick location was appropriate to reduce replenishment frequency as well.

As a result of IMI’s warehouse productivity system being deployed in all 4 warehouse Poundland has complete visibility of the performance of the network and can pinpoint where time is being lost and where opportunities exist to improve productivity. Taking their use of the system to another level and forming part of a long term people retention strategy, Poundland uses IMI’s system to underpin a performance related pay scheme.

The information provided by the system enables Poundland to identify the employees who have met the criteria to receive performance related pay, a forward thinking strategy from an employer who wants to live by their values.
